

Back up your computer and perform an Archive and Install of your operating system.

If that works, it's a setting in your user account or a background program you've added causing the problem. (You can also get to a similar menu by option-clicking the speaker icon in your menu bar at the top-right of your screen.) Make sure the output device you want (Internal Speakers, Line Out, AirPlay device) is highlighted. In System Preferences, click Sound, then select the Output tab. Possible hardware includes: logic board (the main circuitry of your computer, including your sound card), I/O board, line out jack (if applicable), external sound card (often found in USB devices), and wiring to internal speakers.
